Listen, we get it. Running your business’ social media is all about trial and error – some things work while other things should never be done again.

And when you’re trying to keep up with the ever-changing algorithm, push your products and services, and engage with your target audience all at the same time, it can be easy to make common mistakes you don’t even realize you’re doing.

Well, that’s what we’re here for. We’re going to shed light on some common mistakes businesses make on social media so you can stop the nonsense and focus on what actually does work. 

1. Posting inconsistently.

We know, you’re super busy – and sometimes keeping up with your social media is the last thing on your to-do list. But that inconsistency is killing your engagement and therefore hindering you from accessing the sales and clients you could be getting.

The fix: Upload at the same time every day (or a certain amount of times a week) so your customers know what to expect from you. It might even be time to consider hiring a social media manager to take the task off your hands completely.

2. Too much automation.

The theme for 2023 is authenticity. And there’s nothing a consumer dislikes more than brands that aren’t authentic. That’s why cross-posting the same content across multiple platforms is a no-no. 

The fix: While it’s more time consuming than straight up automation, you’ve got to tailor your content for each platform. The language, context, and culture of Instagram vs. Facebook is different, and your business will greatly benefit from being aware and adjusting your social media strategy accordingly. 

3. Less pictures, more videos and Stories.

Listen, you’ve got to give the people what they want. And we’ve shared in multiple blog posts that video content is it. You’re much more likely to get people to stop scrolling and start listening and better yet, purchasing, when you create the kind of content they want to see, even if it’s not necessarily what’s most convenient for you.

The fix: Focus on creating awesome Stories to provide your audience with an even more intimate way to interact with your brand.

4. Not making the most of your social media bio.

Please don’t tell me your website isn’t linked in your bio. And while you’re at it, does your bio clearly tell people who you are and what you do? An IG bio may only be 150 characters but that’s more than enough space to make it clear what your company does and why we should follow you. 

The fix: Ensure your bio has your title/role, company name, 

5. Not giving others credit for their work.

You’ve got a whole team behind you making you and your business look good – but you never shout them out on social media. People aren’t that naive. They know when you’re taking all the credit yourself, and it’s a huge turnoff. Not only is this practice unprofessional, but it’s keeping good people and potential customers from sticking around.

The fix: Shoutout your team on occasion and give credit where credit is due.

6. Waiting for perfection to post.

Listen, we’re all about creating flawless content that looks amazing and gets the results you want. But sometimes the standard of perfection stops you from posting at all, and it’s time to nip that habit in the bud. 

The fix: Create content that is interesting, relevant, and personalized to your audience. There’s always room for improvement, but it shouldn’t stop you from starting.

7. Lack of strategy and a target audience.

But also – don’t just post for the sake of posting. A lot of businesses start out strong and then lose steam because they never had a strategy they could stick to. 

The fix: Make sure your content calendar is one you can adhere to so you don’t risk losing engaged followers in your attempt to stay ahead of the game.

8. Not monitoring your social media.

There’s more to keeping up with your social media than posting. It’s important to respond to suggestions, comments, complaints or questions regarding your business or products.

The fix: Create a schedule you can follow in order to post and respond to your loyal followers.
